What is Carols by Streetlight?

Carols by Streetlight is a movement within Christian churches across Australia, singing the Christmas story into the heart of the community.

This Christmas, we are asking churches nationwide to join with us by sending groups out into their local neighbourhoods between the 18th and 24th of December to sing ‘Carols by Streetlight.’ To find out more about the vision behind Carols by Streetlight, check out our promotional video. If you’d like to get on board, feel free to show the video at your church and help us spread the word via your social media channels too.

We’d love for as many groups as possible to join in, singing ability is not important – many voices make a great sound. We’ve provided all the resources you need to get started, so if your church is keen to get involved, create a group and start caroling!

Resources

The promotional materials below can be used at your church/organisation to promote Carols by Streetlight to your church community. If you intend to congregate on private property ie. in a shopping centre, mall or food outlet you will need to request permission well ahead of time (using the permission form linked to below) and provide a copy of Public Liability insurance from your Church.

Remember, the goal is to spread the light of the Story of Christmas by singing carols in your neighbourhood streets rather than just in spaces like shopping centres. For this reason we would encourage you to choose several local streets and sing carols in a few places to bless as many people in the local community as possible.

Thanks for being involved!

Carols (Official Lyric Sheets)

The number of carols you choose to sing and the number of streets you visit is up to your group/church, however we would ask you to only sing Christmas carols that share the light of the true story of Christmas (see list below) rather than secular Christmas songs. These carols have been approved for public use and do not require a license. It may be good to print a few extra copies of carols for listeners that want to join in. Note: iPhone users may find the app ‘Pitch, Please!’ helpful for locating the starting note.

Helpful Tips

How many people do should sing in a group?

Comfortable group sizes are as follows:

  • Competent singers: 5
  • Average singers: 8-10

How should my group choose where to sing?

A few things to consider:

  • Make sure there are footpaths for strollers etc.
  • You will likely find you generate better volume on back streets than main roads.
  • Standing still to sing is easier than walking.

When should we go caroling and for how long?

  • In fine weather because rain keeps people indoors.
  • 45 minutes of walking, pausing & singing can cover a couple of blocks.

"It made me feel happy when we sang altogether."
